Heavyweight Reality Check: Betting On Jake Paul vs. Anthony Joshua

Jake Paul and Anthony Joshua posing for the cameras at the pre-fight press conference

The next chapter in Jake Paul’s “professional boxing” career is happening on December 19th in Miami, and represents a major step up in competition for the YouTuber. This time, he’ll be fighting former two-time heavyweight champion Anthony Joshia, a boxer who outclasses him in every category save for age.

Many players (us included) were suckered into betting on Mike Tyson to wipe the floor with Paul last November, so why will things be any different this go-round? Unlike Tyson, Joshua is an elite heavyweight that is still in his prime fighting years.

To many critics, Joshua did the sport of boxing a favor when he knocked out Francis Ngannou in the second round last March. Ngannou had arguably beaten Tyson Fury in October of 2023, so Joshua’s brutal beatdown served as notice for any further UFC fighters looking to enter a professional boxing ring.

Why Would Paul Take This Fight?

Is Paul actually attempting to climb out of the ranks of celebrity boxing to become a legitimate contender? If he were to somehow defeat Joshua, critics and promoters would be forced to take Paul more seriously.

In our estimation, Paul’s earning power peaked with the Tyson fight, and this could be his last chance at a large boxing payday before the charade implodes.

The Anthony Joshua vs. Jake Paul fight can be seen streaming in the United States on Netflix, December 19th at 8 p.m.
