AI Sports Betting Update: Evaluations And New Projections

A robot doing a facepalm while mobile sports betting

Last week, we used AI clients to project a sports betting win for a WNBA game between the Los Angeles Sparks and the Indiana Fever. Three different artificial intelligence clients predicted the point spread winner, overall winner, and the over/under total for the game based on the latest betting line.

All three clients suggested that the Fever would cover the spread of -5.5 points and win the game, even without the presence of star Caitlin Clark in the lineup. It seems that AI underestimated Clark’s absence, as the Sparks won the game by a final score of 85-75.

Artificial intelligence was also incorrect on the over/under predictions. All three clients implied that the final tally would be at least 165 points, but the Sparks and Fever combined for 160.

Where Did AI Go Wrong?

Despite AI’s acknowledgement that the Fever would not perform up to their usual level without Caitlin Clark, all three clients agreed that Indiana would still be capable of winning on the road.

A common complaint of AI-generated results during the technology’s infancy is its reliance on old data. Is AI’s inability to scrape current news and other related online resources negatively impacting its sports betting predictions? Probably.

There is also the issue of garbage in, garbage out. Translation: These clients may perform better if given stronger prompts.

Giving AI Another Go

Tonight at 10:10 p.m., the first pitch will be thrown across home plate in Los Angeles when the Dodgers host the Chicago White Sox.

Chicago White Sox @ Los Angeles Dodgers Betting Line

  • Run Spread: White Sox +1.5 (+135), Dodgers -1.5 (-160)
  • Moneyline: White Sox +270, Dodgers -345
  • Over: 8.5 (-110)
  • Under: 8.5 (-110)

Online MLB sportsbooks have created moneyline odds that imply a win for the Dodgers and that they will defeat the White Sox by at least two runs. The over/under suggests that both teams will combine to score between eight and nine runs.

This time, instead of supplying the above sports betting line from Bovada, we’ve simply asked which team will cover the spread, win, and how many total runs will be scored.

Perplexity AI suggests that the best bets for tonight’s game are on the White Sox covering the spread, the Dodgers winning outright, and eight or fewer combined runs being scored.

When we asked ChatGPT the same question, the client suggested that the Dodgers will cover the spread and win the game, and the total runs will be 8.5 or lower.

Grok 3 rendered the most detailed results of the three, citing White Sox pitcher Shane Smith and his recent strong performances as the reason that Chicago will cover the +1.5 points against LA. Grok also believes that the Dodgers will win and that the run total will be no more than eight tonight.

Based on these findings, we should bet on the following:

  • Bet on the under of 8.5 total runs for LA and Chicago
  • Bet on the moneyline odds for the Dodgers to win

We will check back next week to see how accurate these projections were.
