The field and gate draws of the 146th Kentucky Derby are set.
And that, of course, means that betting odds are finally posted for the 2020 Run for the Roses.
If you’ve been following along with this year’s adjusted Triple Crown schedule, it should come as no surprise that Tiz the Law, winner of the abbreviated Belmont Stakes on June 20, is favored to win The Fastest Two Minutes in Sports.
However, after the anticipated post-position drawing, you might be very surprised to learn just how big a Kentucky Derby betting favorite he is, especially given the fact that he’ll be starting the race out of the 17th position.
No horse in the history of the Kentucky Derby has ever started from Post 17 and gone on to with the race. Forty-one horses have tried, and 41 horses have failed.
Nevertheless, Tiz the Law is a 3-5 favorite at the official Churchill Downs racebook. That means you’d have to put up $3 to win $5 on Tiz the Law’s Derby chances.
For sports bettors unused to horse racing betting, that translates to American moneyline odds of -167, and it’s a rare thing indeed that a Kentucky Derby horse is favored in the negative.
Of course, Tiz the Law’s post draw is an issue that will likely temper his opening numbers, and the morning line odds on Saturday could certainly shift to offer longer odds – and thus, better payouts – on the three-year-old bay colt out of New York.
As always, the final Kentucky Derby odds won’t be known until all betting is closed right before the race is scheduled to start at 7:01 PM EST (NBC).
For those interested in the entire undercard, the first races of the day will commence at 11:00 AM, with NBC’s Kentucky Derby coverage beginning at 2:30 PM.
While there will be plenty of action on the first 13 races of the day (including at all the best international online racebooks), the main event will dwarf the money risked on all these races combined.
