It’s not golf if you’re not gambling.
The British Open, the 148th in the Open Championship’s history, begins tomorrow at Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland.
Golf’s oldest major championship will be played on the Dunluce Course in County Antrim where 156 of the world’s best golfers will compete for a $10.75 million purse.
The country’s favorite son, Rory McIlroy, is favored in the tournament at +800, per BetOnline.
On his heels are Brooks Koepka (+1000), Jon Rahm (+1400), and Dustin Johnson (+1600) while 2019 Masters winner Tiger Woods (+1800) rounds out the top 5 odds.
Last year’s British Open winner, Francesco Molinari, is listed at +2500, and Gary Woodland, the winner of the 2019 US Open, received +5000 odds.

Royal Portrush breakdown
This is the first time in 68 years that the British Open will be played on Irish soil. The Royal Portrush Golf Club was founded in 1888 on the northern coast in County Antrim and features the picturesque Dunluce Course with coastline greens commonplace among British Open courses.
Now, picking the Open champion is a straightforward approach to golf betting, making it a reasonable bet. But the real fun lies in the prop bets.
Bettors can wager if any golfer will set a new course record of 61 or lower, which has +2500 odds of happening, or if the 54 hole leader will win the entire tournament (not likely at -130).
Branden Grace holds the current British Open course record at 62, snagged in the tournament’s 3rd round in 2017.
Other relevant prop bets to watch for are the cut line bets (under 144.5 is -155) and if all four rounds will be in the 60s (no at -4000).
The cut occurs after the second round of golf at the Open Championship. The top 70 golfers, including those tied for 70th, make the cut for the third round of play. In 2018, the cut line was 145.
However, there are some bets that don’t really have much to do with the game itself, possibly making them even more fun.
BetOnline is accepting action on the winner’s first hug (wife/girlfriend at +150) or the winner’s choice of headgear (+2500 for no hat/visor).
The last five Open champions have all worn hats, explaining why the odds that the 2019 winner will wear a hat/cap are -2000.
There is a prop bet for almost everything that could happen on the links over the next couple days, and below you can find the best ones from this year’s Open Championship.
To stay up to date on this year’s British Open, catch the tournament on the Golf Channel and NBC between July 18-21. The first golfers tee off at 1:35 a.m. ET Thursday.
