British Open Betting 2024: Scottie Scheffler Leads Pre-Tourney Odds

Scottie Scheffler hitting a chip shot

The Open Championship, aka the British Open, begins this Thursday at Troon, South Ayrshire, Scotland. Scottie Scheffler won The Masters in April and leads the pre-tournament odds to win on the Tuesday before the opening swing.

Scheffler has captured two championships at The Masters, but other Majors have eluded him. Featured second in Open Championship odds is Rory McIlroy, winner of the 2014 British Open. The Masters is the only major that Mcllroy has not won.

Recent Open Championship Winners

  • 2023 – Brian Harman
  • 2022 – Cameron Smith
  • 2021 – Collin Morikawa
  • 2019 – Shane Lowry
  • 2018 – Francesco Molinari
  • 2017 – Jordan Spieth

The 6th hole in this year’s tourney will feature the longest par 5 in the history of the Open Championship at a distance of 623 yards.

2024 Major Winners

  • The Masters – Scottie Scheffler
  • PGA Championship – Xander Schauffele
  • US Open – Bryson DeChambeau
  • British Open – TBD

When it comes to British Open betting, laying some action on the champion before it starts always involves long odds. For example, here are the current Open Championship futures offered at Bovada.

The Open Futures

  • Scottie Scheffler +550
  • Rory McIlroy +800
  • Ludvig Aberg +1400
  • Xander Schauffele +1500
  • Bryson DeChambeau +1600
  • Collin Morikawa +1800
  • Tommy Fleetwood +2500
  • Tyrrell Hatton +2500
  • Jon Rahm +2800
  • Robert MacIntyre +3000
  • Viktor Hovland +3000
  • Brooks Koepka +4000

Even the favorite will deliver a payout of 5.5-to-1.

While these futures bets can be lucrative, we often focus on the tournament props that are offered at online golf sportsbooks. The reason is that the winning percentages are much higher than wagering on the outright winner, and there are outcomes that cash in during each round.

Tiger Woods vs. Phil Mickelson

  • Tiger Woods+112
  • Phil Mickelson -132

BetUS has offered the above British Open prop bet that allows for gambling on who has the better finish between Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. Phil the Thrill has the early edge, as he’s been playing more consistently than Tiger lately.

Also, the moneyline odds for each golfer are much closer to even, so payouts won’t reach the enormous sums that can be earned by calling your shot before the tournament begins and wagering on Open Championship futures.

The following head-to-head matchup prop includes a stroke spread for Scheffler vs. Mcllroy.

Scottie Scheffler vs. Rory Mcllroy Betting Line

  • Stroke Spread Scheffler -1.5, Mcllroy +1.5
  • Odds To Win: Scheffler -135, Mcllroy +112

Again, these PGA prop bets give gamblers a much better chance of winning, and they are offered for each round of the tournament.

This will be the last golf major of 2024, with April 2025’s The Masters being the next one on the PGA schedule.
