Lane Kiffin will walk back into Vaught-Hemingway Stadium on Saturday night, but this time in LSU colors. No. 7 LSU travels to face No. 8 Ole Miss on September 19 at 7:30 p.m. ET in one of the biggest games on the Week 3 college football schedule.
Both teams enter the SEC opener at 2-0, and oddsmakers have LSU installed as a slight road favorite. The storyline goes well beyond the betting board, however, as Kiffin returns to Oxford for the first time since leaving the Rebels following the 2025 season to become LSU’s head coach. He went 55-19 over six seasons at Ole Miss before moving to Baton Rouge.

Kiffin’s Tigers demolished Clemson 51-10 while producing 644 yards of total offense, then followed that with a 45-14 victory over Louisiana Tech. LSU’s defense is the biggest reason to consider laying the three points. Over two games, the Tigers have allowed about 2.5 yards per play while pairing that defense with an offense capable of creating explosive plays in bunches.
Quarterback Sam Leavitt also gives Kiffin a dual-threat weapon. Against Clemson, Leavitt threw for 230 yards, rushed for another 113, and threw for three touchdowns.
Why Ole Miss Can Cover
Ole Miss has considerably more offensive firepower than either of LSU’s first two opponents. Trinidad Chambliss threw for 336 yards and three touchdowns against Louisville and enters Week 3 with 561 passing yards through two games.
The Rebels also already have experience winning a close game, beating No. 24 Louisville 41-38 on a last-second field goal. With a capacity crowd behind them and a quarterback capable of attacking LSU vertically, taking three points with Ole Miss is far from unreasonable.

We predict that LSU at -3 (-110) will cover the spread. Ole Miss can score, but LSU’s defensive efficiency, rushing ability, and explosive offense give the Tigers more ways to control the game.
We also like Over 58.5 (-115). Ole Miss has already scored 41 points in each of its first two games, while LSU has scored 51 and 45. Louisville also demonstrated that the Rebels can be pulled into a shootout, putting the over firmly in play if Chambliss can generate touchdowns rather than field goals.
For bettors who want less exposure to a close finish, LSU moneyline at around -152 provides an alternative to laying the field goal. Kiffin’s return will dominate the headlines, but LSU’s early-season performance provides the stronger reason to back the Tigers Saturday night.
