Great Sports Betting Movies: Eight Men Out (1988)

Long before the Pete Rose betting scandal of the 1980s, the Chicago White Sox shook the professional sports world by aiding sports bettors and fixing the outcomes of their own World Series games.

The film Eight Men Out (1988) is a dramatization of the events surrounding the 1919 World Series fix, also known as the Black Sox Scandal.

Any movie that casts a team of professional athletes tends to include youngsters who go on to greater heights. This film is no exception, as it features the following notable performers.

Notable Eight Men Out Cast

John Cusack – Cusack plays third baseman Buck Weaver. Buck’s performance in the series showed no signs of a fix, posting a batting average of .324 with 11 total hits. This is one of Cusack’s first serious performances following a string of comedy hits in the 1980s.

D. B. Sweeney – Sweeney plays outfielder “Shoeless Joe” Jackson, who professed for the remainder of his life that he did not participate in the fix, despite accepting a $5,000 bribe. He hit .375 during the series and set a record with 12 base hits, a mark that stood until 1964. Jackson was also famously portrayed by Ray Liotta in the 1989 film Field of Dreams.

Charlie Sheen – Long before Sheen was a household name on the hit series Two and a Half Men, he played Hap “Happy” Felsch, a center fielder who was in on the fix in 1919. He missed a number of flyballs during the series and hit poorly.

Michael Rooker – Rooker plays Charles “Chick” Gandil, a first baseman who was also in on the bribe. He was one of the first to be approached about the prospect and helped convince other players to join in. Rooker went on to a very successful career as a character actor in big-budget films. His zenith was arguably his performance as Merle in the hit series The Walking Dead.

Christopher Lloyd – Lloyd’s portrayal of bribe-arranger Bill Burns came during the middle of the Back to the Future trilogy, where he co-starred as Doc Brown.

Details Surrounding The Black Sox Scandal

The fix was born out of the White Sox player’s low salary. Burns and his cronies offered each player $5,000 to throw the series, and likely made a fortune betting on the World Series as a result.

Suspicion of a fix was immediate based on some players’ performances, but it remained undiscovered until 1920, thanks to a combination of investigative journalism and a grand jury investigation.

Two players, Jackson and Weaver, maintained their innocence throughout the remainder of their lives. In all, eight players were permanently banned from Major League Baseball, including Weaver and Jackson.

On May 13, 2025, Buck Weaver and Shoeless Joe Jackson were reinstated and ruled eligible for the MLB Hall of Fame by Commissioner Rob Manfred.
