Can The 49ers Still Make The Playoffs After A 5-7 Start?

The San Francisco 49ers are the defending National Football Conference champions and were rated as the top team in the NFC entering the 2024-25 NFL season.

With five games remaining on San Francisco’s schedule, they are 5-7 and in the cellar of the NFC West.

NFC West Standings

  • Seattle Seahawks 7-5
  • Arizona Cardinals 6-6
  • LA Rams 6-6
  • San Francisco 49ers 5-7

There’s still some time to make up ground in the division, but NFL betting sites aren’t giving the 49ers much of a chance. Their +1200 odds to win the NFC West reflect an 8% probability of success.

Part of the downgrade is due to their lackluster performance, but a major factor is the recent injuries to the top two running backs in San Francisco. Christian McCaffrey is now out for the year, and Jordan Mason may be placed on injured reserve as well.

That leaves rookie Isaac Guerendo as the lead back, and the 49ers have a history of getting the most out of their RBs under Kyle Shannahan.

NFC West Futures

  • Seattle Seahawks +150
  • Arizona Cardinals +175
  • Los Angeles Rams +285
  • San Francisco 49ers +1200

The odds for betting on the San Francisco 49ers favor them to win the next two games and climb back to an even 7-7 record. We expect that the line on the Miami Dolphins and 49ers in Week 16 will be close to a pick’em due to the game being played in Hard Rock Stadium.

The Dolphins have proven their inability to beat a team of substance, regardless of whether Tua Tagovailoa is in the lineup. If the 49ers intend to make a playoff run, they must get beyond a team like Miami.

Remaining 49ers Schedule

  • Moneyline: Bears +165, 49ers -195

Week 16 @ Miami Dolphins

  • Offline

Week 17 vs Detroit Lions

  • Offline

Week 18 @ Arizona Cardinals

  • Offline

The toughest remaining matchup on the schedule occurs in Week 17 at home versus the Detroit Lions, who will most certainly be favored. The one saving grace is that the 49ers are playing in Levi’s Stadium, and with any luck, they could be on a three-game winning streak by that time.

San Francisco lost to the Cardinals on October 6th, and that was when the 49ers had a full complement of talent to compete with.

Will 9-7 be enough to get SF into the postseason? That is not likely, as Seattle already has seven wins, and there’s no real chance of them earning a wild card spot. They’ll have to take the division to keep their Super Bowl 59 hopes alive and cannot afford another loss this year.
