The first major Thursday night of the 2026 college football season has arrived, giving bettors a full slate of games to consider before an even bigger schedule takes over the weekend. The most recognizable matchup comes from Atlanta, where Colorado begins its fourth season under Deion Sanders with a visit to Georgia Tech.
The Buffaloes enter the opener following a disappointing 3-9 season, while Georgia Tech went 9-4 last year. Sportsbooks have responded by making the Yellow Jackets approximately a touchdown favorite, although the line has moved between Georgia Tech -6.5 and -7.5 at different books Thursday morning. Colorado is available at roughly +205 to +210 on the moneyline, while the game total is sitting around 50.5 to 51.
That is far from the only betting opportunity available Thursday. Illinois, Utah, and Missouri are all sizable favorites, creating an interesting mix of competitive spreads and enormous Week 1 numbers.
Here are five picks for college football betting worth watching Thursday night.
Colorado +6.5 Vs. Georgia Tech
Colorado’s +6.5 point spread will probably attract plenty of attention simply because getting nearly a touchdown with a Deion Sanders-coached team is more appealing than laying points against one.
There are legitimate reasons to consider the Buffaloes. Sophomore quarterback Julian Lewis takes control of the offense under new offensive coordinator Brennan Marion, and Colorado has added Texas transfer DeAndre Moore Jr., San Jose State transfer Danny Scudero, and Miami (Ohio) transfer Kam Perry to its receiving corps. Those three players combined for more than 2,800 receiving yards last season.
The problem is the amount of turnover surrounding Lewis. Colorado is replacing both coordinators, and its defensive two-deep is overwhelmingly composed of players who were not with the program last season. The Buffaloes are essentially asking a newly assembled defense to immediately play well enough on the road to keep this game within one score.
There is also an important number to watch. Some sportsbooks had already moved Colorado from +6.5 to +7.5 Thursday morning. If you like the Buffaloes, getting more than a touchdown is considerably more attractive than taking +6.5.
Our Lean: Colorado +7 or better.
Georgia Tech -6.5 Vs. Colorado
The opposite side may actually provide the stronger football argument. Georgia Tech has significant roster turnover of its own, including replacing quarterback Haynes King and offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner. However, the Yellow Jackets appear to have much more continuity than Colorado and should once again be capable of establishing a physical running game.
Michigan transfer Justice Haynes is one of the biggest additions. Haynes averaged 3.77 yards after contact per carry last season and joins a Georgia Tech offense that should continue emphasizing the ground game under head coach Brent Key.
That could be an especially difficult opening assignment for a Colorado defense filled with transfers playing their first game together. The number is again crucial. Georgia Tech -6.5 means a seven-point victory cashes the ticket. Georgia Tech -7.5 requires the Yellow Jackets to win by more than a touchdown, substantially changing the wager.
Anyone backing Georgia Tech should therefore shop around before placing the bet. The -6.5 is considerably more appealing than chasing the line after it moves through seven.
Our Pick: Georgia Tech -6.5.
Colorado Vs. Georgia Tech Over 50.5
The total may offer the best way to bet the Colorado-Georgia Tech matchup without choosing between the two sides. Georgia Tech should be able to move the football against Colorado’s rebuilt defense, particularly on the ground. Colorado’s offense also has enough playmakers to contribute its share of points.
Lewis was one of the country’s most highly regarded quarterback recruits, and Marion’s arrival could result in Colorado playing at a considerably faster pace on offense. Meanwhile, Georgia Tech ranked 114th in EPA per pass defensively last season, providing Colorado with an obvious area to attack. Both teams also finished outside the Top 80 nationally in EPA per rush and EPA per pass on defense in 2025.
A score such as 31-24 would comfortably get the game over 50.5 while also matching the general expectation that Georgia Tech wins a competitive game. The total has bounced between approximately 50.5 and 51.5 depending on the sportsbook. That difference is not enormous, but bettors should still seek 50.5 if available.
Our Pick: Over 50.5.
Utah -35.5 Vs. Idaho
Laying five touchdowns is rarely comfortable, but Utah has the type of matchup where a massive point spread may be justified. No. 21 Utah hosts Idaho at Rice-Eccles Stadium with the Utes favored by approximately 35 points. Utah begins a new era under head coach Morgan Scalley, but quarterback Devon Dampier gives the offense considerable continuity.
Dampier is particularly dangerous as a runner. He surpassed 800 rushing yards last season while helping Utah field an offense that ranked among the nation’s most efficient units. Utah also returns running back Wayshawn Parker and added receiver Braden Pegan after he produced 926 receiving yards at Utah State.
Idaho’s Week 0 performance makes the matchup particularly concerning for the Vandals. Idaho surrendered more than 500 yards and 38 points against Cal Poly.
Utah has also shown little hesitation about running up comfortable margins against FCS opponents. Since 2021, the Utes have defeated five non-FBS opponents by an average of 43 points, according to Covers.
The spread has reached as high as Utah -35.5 Thursday. That is enormous, but a game in the neighborhood of 49-10 or 52-10 would still get Utah bettors to the window.
Our Pick: Utah -35.5.
Illinois -27.5 Vs. UAB
Illinois provides another opportunity for bettors willing to lay a large number Thursday night. The Fighting Illini enter their home opener as roughly 27.5- to 28-point favorites over UAB. Illinois is coming off consecutive nine-win seasons and has gone 12-2 at home since 2024.
There are changes on both sides. Illinois will start East Carolina transfer Katin Houser at quarterback after he threw for approximately 3,300 yards and 19 touchdowns last season. The Illini also retain running back Ca’Lil Valentine and receivers Collin Dixon and Hudson Clement.
UAB presents a much different situation.
The Blazers have 62 new players and are beginning their first full season under head coach Alex Mortensen. UAB is also replacing its entire group of returning defensive starters, creating the kind of early-season continuity disadvantage that can become particularly problematic against a Big Ten opponent on the road.
Illinois does have enough new pieces that laying four touchdowns carries risk. However, UAB’s massive roster turnover makes it difficult to trust the Blazers to remain competitive for four quarters.
Our Pick: Illinois -27.5.
Thursday Night College Football Parlay
Bettors looking for a parlay wager could combine three of the plays above:
- Georgia Tech -6.5
- Colorado vs. Georgia Tech Over 50.5
- Utah -35.5
The first two legs are correlated without requiring a very specific game script. Georgia Tech can cover in a 31-21 or 34-24 victory, while Colorado scoring enough to remain competitive would also help the Over.
Utah becomes the more aggressive third leg. The Utes should have an enormous talent advantage against Idaho, but any wager involving a spread larger than five touchdowns carries considerable late-game risk once starters begin leaving the field.
Bettors looking for less volatility could simply play the Georgia Tech -6.5/Over 50.5 same-game combination instead.
Best College Football Bet Tonight: Georgia Tech -6.5
Of the available Thursday lines, Georgia Tech -6.5 stands out as our favorite bet provided that number remains available.
Colorado has intriguing offensive talent, but asking an almost completely reconstructed defense to immediately function at a high level on the road is a major concern. Georgia Tech can counter that in the simplest possible way by handing the ball off to Haynes and repeatedly testing Colorado’s front seven.
The number matters more than usual. At -6.5, Georgia Tech only needs to win by seven. At -7.5, bettors would need at least an eight-point victory. That makes Georgia Tech -6.5 our best college football bet for Thursday, September 3, with Colorado-Georgia Tech Over 50.5 and Utah -35.5 rounding out our favorite plays.
Thursday is only the beginning. Once these games finish, a loaded Friday and Saturday slate will provide the first real opportunity to determine which preseason expectations were justified and which college football teams were badly mispriced before they ever took the field.
