South Carolina’s 2026 U.S. Senate election has been transformed from a regularly scheduled reelection campaign into one of the year’s most unusual political contests. Following the death of longtime Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham, his sister, Darline Graham Nordone, was appointed to occupy the vacant seat. She has now entered the special Republican primary as a substantial betting favorite.
The latest odds for the special Republican primary are:
- Darline Graham: -600
- Ralph Norman: +375
- Russell Fry: +1400
At -600, Graham is being given an implied probability of approximately 85.7% at political sportsbooks. A $600 wager would return $100 in profit if she wins the nomination.
Those numbers establish Graham as the candidate to beat, but her unusual path into the Senate leaves bettors with several factors to consider before treating her nomination as inevitable.
How Darline Graham Entered the Senate
Lindsey Graham had represented South Carolina in the U.S. Senate since 2003 and was preparing to seek another term in 2026. His death on July 11, reportedly caused by an aortic tear, suddenly created a vacancy and forced state officials to determine who would temporarily fill the position.
South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster selected Graham’s sister, Darline Graham Nordone, to serve as the interim senator. She was sworn in on July 14 and initially appeared positioned as a temporary officeholder who would complete the immediate duties associated with the vacant seat.
That arrangement changed when Graham announced that she would run in the special election herself.
The decision gives her several immediate advantages. She can campaign as the sitting senator, use the Graham name and maintain continuity with her brother’s political organization. She has also received an endorsement from President Donald Trump, an especially valuable asset in a South Carolina Republican primary.
Why Graham Is the Heavy Betting Favorite
Graham’s -600 moneyline odds are primarily based on her combination of incumbency, name recognition, and political support rather than a lengthy record as a candidate.
Although she had not previously held elected office, she became a recognizable statewide figure almost immediately after her appointment. Her campaign can present her as both a continuation of Lindsey Graham’s service and a candidate with her own priorities.
She has indicated that her campaign will emphasize everyday economic concerns, including healthcare expenses and the cost of food and fuel. She can also point to previous public service on the South Carolina Commission for the Blind.
Her brother’s political network may be just as important. Lindsey Graham entered the 2026 campaign cycle with an established fundraising operation and years of relationships across the state. Even if Darline Graham cannot automatically inherit every supporter, the organizational structure surrounding the former senator gives her a considerable head start over candidates attempting to build a campaign on an abbreviated schedule.
Trump’s endorsement also makes it more difficult for her opponents to portray her as disconnected from the current Republican electorate. Both Ralph Norman and Russell Fry have cultivated strong conservative records, but Graham’s endorsement allows her to compete directly for many of the same voters.
Prediction-market pricing shortly after her appointment also identified her as the clear favorite, although earlier market percentages were less decisive than the current -600 sportsbook line.
Could Ralph Norman Challenge the Favorite?
Ralph Norman is the most credible betting alternative at +375. Those odds carry an implied probability of approximately 21.1% before the bookmaker’s margin is removed.
Norman has considerably more campaign experience than Graham and can argue that the seat should be awarded through a competitive election rather than passed between members of the same family. That message could resonate with voters who are uncomfortable with Graham being appointed and then using the benefits of incumbency to seek the office permanently.
Some prominent conservatives have rallied behind Norman, demonstrating that the Republican establishment is not completely united around Graham. There has also been skepticism among Republican operatives about whether her family name, limited campaign experience and low previous public profile will translate into votes.
Nevertheless, Norman faces a difficult task. He must attack the circumstances surrounding Graham’s appointment without appearing disrespectful toward a recently deceased senator who remained influential within the state party. He must also compete against a candidate supported by Trump while convincing Republican voters that he is the stronger representative of the president’s agenda.
Is Russell Fry Worth Considering at +1400?
Russell Fry offers the largest potential return of the three listed candidates. His +1400 odds imply approximately a 6.7% chance of winning.
Fry has experience winning Republican contests and can present himself as a younger, established conservative alternative. However, he occupies a difficult position in the primary. Graham currently holds the strongest endorsements and name recognition, while Norman appears best positioned to consolidate voters who oppose her appointment.
Fry would probably need Graham and Norman to divide the party’s leading factions while he builds a separate coalition. Unless polling begins showing a three-way contest, his +1400 price reflects a campaign that currently has a narrow path to victory.
The complete field may also complicate the race. Former Gov. Mark Sanford has entered the Republican contest, while other candidates could divide the anti-Graham vote. The primary is scheduled for August 11, with a runoff on August 25 if no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote.
A larger field may actually strengthen Graham’s position by preventing any single challenger from consolidating opposition against her.
Who Will the Republican Nominee Face?
The Republican primary winner is expected to face Democrat Annie Andrews in the November 3 general election. Andrews, a pediatrician who previously ran for South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District, won the June 9 Democratic primary with approximately 62% of the vote.
Andrews provides Democrats with an experienced candidate who has already conducted a major federal campaign. She has emphasized healthcare, economic concerns and opposition to the state’s Republican leadership.
The general election will still favor the Republican nominee because of South Carolina’s recent voting history. That makes the special GOP primary particularly significant: winning the nomination may be the most difficult part of the eventual senator’s path to Washington.
Betting Outlook for Darline Graham
Graham deserves to be favored, but -600 leaves little room for uncertainty. The price assumes her appointment, Trump endorsement, family name and organizational advantages will overcome concerns about her lack of electoral experience.
Her strongest path is straightforward. She must preserve the emotional goodwill surrounding her brother’s death, demonstrate that she can function independently as a senator and prevent Norman from turning the election into a referendum on political succession.
The biggest risk for Graham bettors is that her support may be broad but not especially committed. Voters familiar with Lindsey Graham will recognize her name, but that does not necessarily mean they are ready to elect his sister. A runoff would also give opponents additional time to consolidate behind one alternative.
Even with those concerns, Graham begins the campaign with advantages none of her rivals can fully match. The -600 odds may not offer an attractive return to every bettor, but they accurately reflect a contest in which the newly appointed senator controls the race unless her campaign commits a significant mistake.
